The Company:

Hodder Tugboat Co. Ltd. was founded in the early 1900s and incorporated in 1961 under its current name, Hodder is a privately held general marine towing company located in Richmond, B.C. The Company primarily serves the forest industry, transporting logs, lumber, lumber residuals, pulp, and paper to and from coastal mills and for export.  Hodder also serves companies in diversified industries, which include shipping, sand and gravel aggregate, construction and general cargo. The Company’s services extend along the British Columbia south coast and the navigable reaches of the Fraser River.

Hodder has approximately 50 employees and owns and operates ten tugboats, two barges and four crew boats.  In addition, the Company holds extensive booming ground (or waterlot) leases from the Province of B.C. along the Fraser River which are used for log storage for customers.

The Position:

Reporting to the General Manager, the Operations Manager is a member of the Management Team focused on delivering business results by running efficient day to day operations; fostering exceptional customer service; applying innovative ideas for constant improvement; and resolving issues.  Providing leadership for employee relations and development to the company’s marine transportation professionals and support staff will be a priority. Responsibilities will include ensuring costs are aligned with budget; employee recruiting and terminations; efficiency of all towing operations; overseeing various dock and ship yard projects; and providing weekly reports to GM.

Candidate Prospective:

Ideally candidates will have a successful background in marine transportation on the British Columbia coast.  However, persons who have proven business acumen and competence in a service oriented industrial environment are also encouraged to apply.  Other considerations will include:

  • Management experience with strengths in human resources and conflict resolution
  • Entrepreneurial perspective
  • Project management experience
  • Some financial background or financial oversight experience
  • Problem solving capabilities with attention to innovation and detail


This position will be centered at the head office in Richmond, BC but will occasionally require some travel.
